News Article Feed on AFF Online Bookstore

The index page for our free newsletter, AFF News Briefs, includes a flashing news feed at the top.  Recent news articles flash in this box.  Click on those that interest you and go directly to the site that contains the article.  Since most newspapers only keep articles on the Web for short periods of time, the articles in this news feed change daily.  Moreover, since it is an automatic function based on search words, some "junk" gets interspersed with real news.  Although the news feed is useful, if you really want to keep abreast of cult-related news, subscribe to CSR, which contains dozens of news summaries each issue.

Otra Adicción: Las Sectas y Su Logro de Inducir a Dependencia y Servidumbre

By Amelia Musacchio de Zan2.  In Revista Argentina de Clinica Neuropsiquiatrica, 9(2), October 2000. The author, a psychiatrist, discusses a session on cults organized by the Faculty of Medicine of UBA (presumably University of Buenos Aires) in which an anonymous couple described their abuse experiences. He also discusses his own research and clinical experience in an attempt to illuminate the psychosocial factors that underly this strange and common phenomenon.

We have not as yet seen any official response from the ICC to this report.

Changes in the French Government’s Cult Commission

Info-Cult/Info-Secte has sent us a couple of French news articles indicating that the French organization set up to combat cults ("sectes") has undergone a change of name and leadership.  The former name was Mission Interministérielle de Lutte contre les Sectes (MILS) - Interministerial Commission to Combat Cults.  The new name is Mission Interministérielle de Vigilance et de Lutte contre les Dérives Sectaires (MIVILUDES) - Interministerial Commission for Awareness of and Combat against Cultic Deviance (Editor's translations).

The changes appear to have been precipitated by the resignation of Alain Vivien, the French parliamentarian who led MILS since its creation in 1998.  Vivien resigned two days after the victory of the Right in the election of 18 June.  Jean-Louis Langlais, a civil servant with experience in drug prevention, is the president of the new commission.  He will be assisted by an executive committee composed of representatives from relevant ministerial departments and a public advisory board.

A government spokesman said that "the new agency is charged with observing and analyzing the phenomenon of cultic movements whose actions threaten public order or are contrary to law and regulations" (Editor's translation).

The French reports follow.

Technical Tip

When you visit a Web site, such as www.culticstudiesreview.org, you should refresh your browser because sometimes your Internet browser shows you the Web page from “memory,” so to speak.  The browser may have to be told to show any changes that have been made to the page since your last visit.  In Microsoft’s Internet Explorer you do this by clicking “View” at the top of your screen and then clicking “Refresh” in the drop-down menu that comes up.  Hence, if we send you a notice that there are new postings on www.culticstudiesreview.org, you may have to hit “Refresh” before your browser will show you the changes.

Correction

In AFF News Briefs Number 9, we said in a parenthetical statement: "Indeed, Dr. Wang Wenzhong of the Institute of Psychology, China Academy of Sciences said that there are only four universities in China that give out graduate degrees in psychology."  Dr. Wenzhong in fact said, or meant to say, that there were only four departments of psychology in China in 1984, when he was an undergraduate student.  Today there are more than 30 departments of psychology in mainland China, and in 2004 the International Conference of Psychology will be hosted in Beijing. Thus, although the impact of psychological perspectives on cult issues in China is not as great as in the U.S., it is greater than our report indicated, and it is growing.  We apologize for the error and have corrected the report.
